Why learn French?
Tips for Parents
Like any teacher, I want my students to be as successful in French as they possibly can be. If they are successful as students, they are then more likely to carry those skills with them in future endeavors and become successful in the working world. However, some students don't know what it takes to be a successful student.
In the following sections, I provide both my expectations of the students and tips to help everyone be a success!
OVERALL EXPECTATIONS
To be a successful student, you must:
- Attend class regularly;
- Be on time and prepared for class;
- Respect yourself and others in the class;
- Be responsible;
- Be organized;
- Ask for help when it's needed.
CLASSROOM TOOLS
You are required to bring the following materials to each class:
- A 3-ring binder;
- Regular blue/black pens OR regular lead pencils;
- Red pens / pencils (for marking, correcting and editing);
- Eraser / whiteout;
- Notebook (provided by the school);
- Workbook (le cahier);
- A French / English dictionary;
- A Bescherelle: Complete Guide to Conjugating 12 000 French Verbs, English Edition; ISBN 2-89045-808-3 (STRONGLY RECOMMENDED).
NOTEBOOK ORGANIZATION

When completing exercises in your notebook, all material is to be kept in

the correct order and maintained. When taking notes in

class, paper will be provided and you will be told in which section to put

them. You will also be told in which section to put class handouts. All in

class handouts must also be included. Each page is to be dated at the top

right-hand corner.

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to catch up on missed work

immediately and you may access daily homework through the homework

link at www.uncoupdemain.org.

To help even further, you should have 2 homework "buddies" who will help you get caught up when you are absent or who can help you if you are having difficulty with a particular homework assignment. Their name and phone numbers should be written in your agenda so that you do not lose them.
HOMEWORK
All incomplete class work is homework. All homework will be taken up at the beginning of each class, if it is not being collected for marking. If you fail to complete the homework task satisfactorily or you do not have it with you, you will be given an "X" at the beginning of the class, which will be recorded in my files. If you demonstrate a regular habit of not completing your homework, a phone call will be made to your parents or guardians.
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOUR
1. You are expected to be ON TIME to class.
2. You are to be sitting at your desk with your notebook / binder open to the previous day's work, and ready for the regular warm-up activity.
3. You are expected to respect all people in my classroom.
4. You are expected to participate actively in class, regardless of potential mistakes.
5. Do not write on the desks, chairs, walls, bulletin boards or chalkboards.
6. Do not chew gum or eat candy in class.
7. In general, you will not be permitted to leave the classroom during class time unless on a washroom break or due to special circumstances.
CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION
It is very important that students participate regularly in French class. Please keep in mind that the majority of the course is based on speaking and listening development. Be prepared to speak in French every class with myself and your classmates.
QUIZZES, PROJECTS AND TESTS
These are to be signed by a parent or guardian within the timeframe given to you in class. Signatures will be checked and recorded during class. If you fail to have the required signature, a call will be made to your parents or guardians.
EXTRA HELP
I am available to provide you with extra help after school from 3:00 to 3:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, or Mondays and Fridays from 12:20 - 1:00 (during Homework Club) in my classroom. But remember, it is up to YOU to ask for help as soon as you need it.
