Why learn French?
Tips for Parents

This course is based on the Ontario Curriculum, French as a Second Language: Core French, as developed by the Ministry of Education, 1998, and the Peel District School Board approved VISAGES 3 French Program (Grade 6) and the ON Y VA! French Program (Grade 7). This course is based on three language skills and amphasizes the development of the following: oral communication (listening and speaking skills), reading and writing.

The overall expectations for each strand as outlined by the Ministry are as follows:

ORAL COMMUNICATION(listening and speaking skills)
- listen to and talk about short, oral texts in structured and open-ended situations;

READING
- read a variety of classroom and simple authentic materials (150 to 200 words long for Grade 6; 200 to 400 words long for Grade 7), and demonstrate understanding;
- communicate information and ideas in writing, in structured and open-ended situations, for different purposes;

WRITING
- identify and use the vocabulary, grammar and language conventions appropriate for this grade level.
However, you must understand that the different strand also affect your report card differently, as each strand is weighted differently. Although all 3 strands are very important, the main focus of the French Program is on the oral. The breakdown is as follows:

Term Breakdown
Grade 6
Grade 7
Oral Communication (listening and speaking)
70%
60%
Reading
15%
20%
Writing

20%

This course is based entirely on regular assessment throughout each term, such as class activities (anecdotal), participation (le prof), projects, tests and quizzes; therefore the final grade is reflective of the oral, reading and writing skills demonstrated by the student during the term.
